Oh, Brilliant
Quebec has figured out a surefire way to get rid of Wal-Mart. As you already know, I'm no fan of Wal-Mart so this was nice to read.
Now I'm no big fan of unions either, but I'll admit that it's companies like Wal-Mart that make unions necessary in the first place. People who are making $40,000 a year plus benefits and get six weeks' vacation time do not need a union. People who are working what Wal-Mart considers full-time (an hour or so less than what's required for them to pay health insurance costs), making minimum wage and unable to support their families need unions. People who are fired rather than given a raise need unions. Wal-Mart is like the modern-day Industrial Revolution factory.
I would love to see Wal-Mart close all the unionized stores in Quebec. Not only because it would get rid of a lot of Wal-Marts but because of all the bad publicity it would create for them. You can explain away closing one unionized store, but not over 40 of them. They'll be openly admitting that they're anti-employee and only care about the bottom line. It'll be fantastic.
Of course this sort of thing could never happen in the States. The Republicans will probably pass a special congressional measure allowing Wal-Mart to not only ban any union activity within a hundred miles of any of their stores, but to take away what little benefits they have, and their lunch breaks.
So what do I have to do to organize a Wal-Mart union or two in Alberta? Hand out some pamphlets? Buttons? Go and talk to these delusional, impoverished employees with no current prospects?
Actually, I don't have time for any of that. Go organize yourselves. But you have my support. Once we get rid of them, we can concentrate on Superstore...
